Kande Viharaya Authgama
Kande Viharaya Is One Of The Biggest Buddhist Temple In The Kaluthara Distric .The Name Of This Sacred Place Means Mountain Temple And Was Derived Because It Was Built On The Crest Of A Hill Near To Aluthgama Town. The Temple Is A Formally  Recognized Archaeological Site Of  Sri Lanka.
While The Temple Was Founded By Venerable Mong Karapagala Dewamitta In 1734, The Credits For Its Construction The Venerable Monks Udugama Chandrasara And Dedduwa Dhammananda. However  The Temple Gains Most Of Its Currents Fame, Not From Its Historical Elements, But From The Gigantic Samadhi Buddha Statue Unveiled In 2006. This 48 M Statue Is The Tallest Seated Buddha Statue In The World.

Kande Vihare Has All The Important Features Necessary For A Major Buddhist Temple.These Include The Stupa,Bo Tree,Relic Chamber,Image House, Sri Vishnu Temple And The Four Great Temples Including The Kataragama Temple.The Ancient  Bo Tree, Sri Saranatissa Memorial Meditation Hall And Other Such Structures Are Situated Outsite The Vihara Premises.






Kaluthara  Bodhiya
Kalutara Is Historically Important Due To The Fact That It Was One Of The 32 Places Indicated By Arahant Mahinda Thera To The King Devananpiya Tissa In The 2nd Century B.C. As A Place Where One Of The Thirty Two Saplings Of The Sacred Sri Maha Bodhi Tree In Anuradhapura Be Planted, To Which The King Extended His Patronage. It Is Recorded In The Sinhala Maha Bodhi Wansa That Until Such Time When The Maritime Provinces Were Subjugated By The Portuguese In 1505 A.D., The Historic Kalutara Bodhiya Exited Intact. In The 16th Century This Sacred Site Was Turned In To A Portuguese Fort. Though No Harm Is Supposed To Have Done To The Bodhi It Was Not Venerated By The People During That Period. It Was After The Planting Of A Bodhi In Lower Terrace Of Pahala Maluwa By An Indian Prince From The Pandya Country Named Wickrama Pandya In 1042 A.D. That The Public Began To Venerated And Consider The Site As A Sacred Place. This Prince From Indian Became A Viceroy In The Kalutara Area.,

After The Portuguese, The Dutch Too Use Of The Present Upper Terrace Or The Uda Maluwa Area As A Camp Followed By The British As Well, Subsequently. During The British Period, Since The Latter Half Of The 19 Century, It Was Used As An Office Premises With The Residence Of The Government Agent.

The Development Activities Of The Historic Kalytara Bodhi In The Recent Past Begging With The Kalutara Buddhist Society Which Was Instituted In 1931 Through Untiring Efforts Made By Sir Cyril De Zoysa. In 1942 With The Commencement Of Development Activities In The Lower Terrace, The Pinnacle Of The Chithya Was Laid.

After The Sri Lanka Became Independence, Following A Request Made By Sir Cyril De Zoysa From The First Prime Minister Of The Country, Right Honorable D.S. Senanayaka, The Then Assistant Government Agent Of Kalutara, Mr. C.P. De Silva Took Step To Release The Kahcheryi On The Uda  Maluwa.

Since It Was Felt That There Should Be A Legal Authority To Facilitate The Development Activities, The Bodhi Trust Pioneered By Sir Cyril De Zoysa, Was Established On November 11th 1951. There After, With Land Around The Sacred Bodhi Tree Being Entrusted To The Kalutara Bodhi Trust By The Government, The Area Witnessed A Speedy Development.

It Was In 1964 That The Foundation Stone Was Laid For The Construction Of The Great Chaithya On The Uda Maluwa Following The Structure Of The “Wata Da Ge”, In 1969 All The Lands And Buildings Which Belong To Kachchei Were Entrusted To The Bodhi Trust. By 1976, Construction Work On The Massive “Wata Da Ge” Was Completed And The The Pinnacle Was Laid For Warship By The Public.

The Kalutara Bodhi Trust Hold The Responsibility Of Providing Security To The Kalutara Bodhi And Maintaining The Cleanliness And The Beauty Of The Place. It Continues With The Administrative Activities Too Simultaneously.

Lenawara Rajamaha Viharaya Is One Of The Historical Temple Located Close To Bandaragama Town. According To The Information Provided, This Temple Belongs To The Polonnaruwa Kingdom Time. Lenawara Temple Can Be Easily Accessed From Bandaragama- Horana Main Road.
Lenawara Temple Is Located By A Rocky Hill, And Different Sections Of It Located In Different Levels Of The Hill. So You Need To Climbup To Reach Them.
Once You Enter To The Temple, You Can See The Aramya (Awasa Geya) Where The Monks Resides. Dhamam Shala (Preaching Hall) Located Few Steps Above The Base Level.
Vihara Geya Is Located On The Middle Level Of The Rock Bed. Since The Boo Tree Is Planted On A Rock, It Has Limited Space For Its Roots Assembly. So You Can See Roots Are Running Down Over The Rock Bed Up To The Base Level, Where It Can Find More Earth With Water And Nutarians.
The Temple Pagoda Is Located In The Top Most Level And You Need To Climb Up Again To Reach There.
Visitors Can Get A Good Panoramic View Of The Surrounding Bandaragama Area From The There. Since There Are Some Steep Stairs, Elder Or Weak Persons May Find It Difficult To Climb. Same Time You Need To Have An Extra Care About Your Kids, Since There Are Steep Falls. Best Time To Visit Is In The Evening, To Avoid Heat Of Sun.
There Are Several Caves (Len) Are Located Around The Rock. According To Historical Records, During The Kings Time, One Indian Brahmin Person Lived There. He Used Treat Persons, Who Are Suffering From Catarrh (Means Peenasa In Singhala Language). The Cave He Lived Is Call "Bharahmana Lena.

Richmond Castle Is Located Just 10 Minutes Drive From The Kaluthra Town. If You Are Coming From Colombo, Turn Left From The Clock Tower Junction And Take Palathota Road, Which Goes Parallel To The Kalu Gaga. You Need To Travel 5-6 Km And Richmond Castle Will Be In Your Left Hand Side.

The Place Is Easily Can Be Identify By The Long Parapet Wall And The Name "Richmond Castle" Was Caved On It With Small Colorful Porcelain Tiles.
Richmond Castle Is One Of The Historical Building Located In Palathota, Close Kaluthara Town, Western Province Of Sri Lanka. This Mansion Is Famous For Its Remarkable Architectural Features And One Of The Few Remaining Buildings Belonging To That Era.

The Castle Building Is Located Approximately 500m Away From The Main Gate And In The Middle Of The Way You Will Find The Car Park. Another Small Car Park Also Located By The Castle Also. If You Like Walking And Enjoy The Surrounding Green Landscape, You Can Park The Vehicle In The Main Car Park And Walk To The Castle Via The Gravel Road.
The Richmond Castle Estate Extends Towards Many Acres Of Land And Currently Maintain By The Public Trusty Of Sri Lanka. The Garden At The Entrance Is Nicely Decorated With Statues, Ponds And Flower Pots. Rankoth Viharaya Is The Most Prominent Buddhist Attraction In Panadura. This Temple Was Built On The Top Of A Natural Rock And Can Seen From The Far Distance. Early Days This Place Was Known As The 'Galkanda Viharaya" And Renamed As Rankoth Viharaya In 1890 After Pagoda Was Build. The Name Rankoth Means Golden Pinnacle.
According To The Belief The Rankoth Vihara Bo Tree Was Older Than The Temple Even. Many People Come To This Place, Do The Bodhi Pooja And Expects The Blessing.
The Shrine Room Of The Rankoth Vihara Was Decorated With Large Number Of Murals. Those Depict Many Incidence Of The Life Of The Load Buddha And The Many Jathaka Stories.
Rankoth Vihara Temple Has A Very Close Relationship To The The Great Panadura Controversy Held In Year 26th And 28th In 1873 A.D.. The Panadura Debete Site Is Located Close By By The Railway Line.

It Is Only 40km From Colombo, You Can Have A Wonderful Eve In Kalutara North Beach,Also Known As Calido Beach. This Is A Beautiful Strip Of Land In Between River Kalu ( Black River ) Closer To Its River Mouth And Sea. Since Waves Are Rough And Powerful Swimming In This Waters Is Really Dangerous. You Can Have A Nice Family Gathering Here In The Evenings Since Weather Is So Comfortable. Sand Contains A Nice Black Color.
