                                             Buduruwagala -Monaragala


Buduruwagala Is A Prominent Buddhist Heritage Site, Located Few Km Away From Wellawaya Town In Monaragala District. This Temple Is Unique Because Of Its Seven Rock Carved Out Sculptures Belonging To Mahayana Buddhist Tradition.
Sri Lanka Is Largely Considered As Place For Therarawada Buddhism Tradition. All Most All The Historical Temples In Sri Lanka Belonging To Therawada Tradition. But There Are Few Exceptions, Which Are Belonging To Mahayana Legacy. Buduruwagala Is One Of Them.
Worshiping For "Bodhi Sathva" Figures Is One Of The Key Concept Seen In Mahayana Buddhism. There Are Several Such Statues Can Be Find In Buduruwagala Site.

Buduruwagala Statues Are Believed To Be Belonging To 10th Century. The Main Buddha Statue At The Middle Is Considered As A Statue Of "Deepankara Buddha". This Statue Is 51 Feet High. Still You Can See Some Remaining Of Shaded Colors On These Sculptures. So That Proved That These Statues Are Brightly Colored In Historical Days.



                             Govinda Hela
Govinda Hela Is A Giant Rock Mountain Standing Up Nearly 570 M Above The Ground, Overlooking The Gal Oya Region. This Is Located By The Siyabanduwa- Ampara Main Road , In Uva Province Of Sri Lanka.
This Is Considered As A Place For Security During The Ruhunu Kingdom Time. The Forest Around The Area Is Named As A Protected Forest, So Visitor Should Take Extra Care To Not Disturbing The Natural Beauty Of The Area.
During The British Ruling Time, They Have Given The Name Westminster Abbe, To Commemorate The Famous Westminister Church In London.
Its Believe That The Ruins Found In Govinda Hela Area Belonging To King Buwenaka Bahu.





                      Yudaganawa Tempel Monaragala

Yudaganawa Temple Is Located In Buttala Divisional Secretariat Division Of The Monaragala District Of  Uva Province, Sri Lanka. This Has Been Identified As The Largest Ancient Stupa In The Uva Province
The Origin Of This Stupa Is Not Yet Clear. However, Historians Believe This Is The Site Which The King Dutugamunu Had The Major Battle Against His Brother Saddhatissa In 2nd Century Bc. Also, There Is A Belief That This Is The Stupa Made By King Parakramabahu  The Great In Memory Of His Mother Queen Ratnavali Who Was Cremated Here.






                  Dematamal Viharaya Monaragala

The Dematamal Viharaya Is An Ancient Buddhist Temple In The Okkampitiya Village In Monaragala District  Sri Lanka.  The History Of This Temple Dates Back To The 2nd – 3rd  Century BC ,
According To The Legend, This Is The Temple Which The King Saddhathissa Hid After Being Defeated In The Battle With King Dutugemunu (Brother Of King Saddhatissa).








                                          Maligavila Sacred Place
The Maligavila Sacred Place Is Famous For Its Giant Free-Standing Buddha Statue Belongs To 7th Century. It Is Located In The Monaragala District  Of Uva Province Sri Lanka.  According To The Ancient Chronicle Chulavamsa,  The Statue Has Been Made By A Prince Named Aggabodhi. The Buddha Statue Is 14.5m Tall And It Has Carved Out Of A Single Limestone. Initially, There Had Been An Image House Surrounding This Statue And The Foundation Of It Can Still Be Seen Today.
At About 500 M To The Southeast, There Is Another Statue Called Dambegoda Bodhisattva Statue. According To The Mahavamsa, This Statue Has Been Created By The King Dappula I In The 7th Century.  This Statue Also Identified As The Statue Of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara Natha As Well As Mathrinatha.






                                   Gal Oya National Park
The  Gal Oya National Park Is Located In  Monaragala Districtof Uva Province In Sri Lanka. It Was Established In 1954 And Serves As The Main Catchment Area For Senanayake Samudraya, The Largest Reservoir In Sri Lanka. The Park Is Administrated By The  Department Of Wildlife Conservation.
The Gal Oya National Park Is Spread Over 259km2. The Park Is Mainly Famous Due To Its Elephants, Where You Can See Them Throughout The Year.
The Place Where The Gal Oya Falls To The Senanayake Samudraya Is Called Makara (See The Gallery). In This Place, The Gal Oya Disappears Under Huge Rocks. According To Legend, The Original Name Of This Is Makara Kata (Sinhalese For Dragon’s Mouth) And Later It Has Become Simply Makara.
